Today, my professor asks the class if newspapers are "doing a disservice to their readers by not telling the whole story". The question comes about because another student mentions having to edit his stories at a small-town paper, avoiding controversial issues so as not to offend readers or upset advertisers.
What do the most vocal students do?
They disagree. They argue papers shouldn't offend community values, shouldn't bite the hands that feed them, etc.
They had a point. I don't entirely disagree with the argument. Still, sometimes I am very disturbed by what I hear in my journalism classes. I understand many of my classmates are interested in media, not journalism, and the ethics are different there... but still.
Also, I finally got internet in my dorm room.
